Overview
Iqra (إقرأ) is a full-featured Islamic companion app we built from scratch with React Native and Expo for iOS and Android. It covers the essential daily needs of practising Muslims: accurate prayer times with adhan notifications, a complete Quran reader, 108+ adhkar and duas, a tasbeeh counter and a Qibla compass.
We designed it Arabic-first with forced RTL layout from day one rather than retrofitting it. Every string, every number in Arabic-Indic numerals and every layout decision starts in Arabic. The interface uses the Cairo typeface and Quranic verses are set in KFGQPC Uthmanic Script, with generous line heights tuned for Arabic readability.
The Quran reader ships with two modes: a modern verse-by-verse view with bookmarking and search, and a classic Mushaf view that renders the actual Madinah Mushaf pages with pinch-to-zoom, night mode and a tap-to-reveal overlay. Quran text, dhikr content and prayer calculations are cached locally in SQLite, so the app works fully offline.
Prayer times and adhan
GPS-based calculations with Umm Al-Qura, MWL and ISNA methods. Notifications are scheduled seven days ahead with exact alarms, custom Makkah and Madinah adhan sounds and actions to mark a prayer or snooze.
Dual-mode Quran reader
A verse-by-verse view with gold ayah markers and bookmarks, plus a Mushaf mode with RTL swipe navigation, pinch-to-zoom and an overlay showing surah, juz and page.
Dhikr, dua and tasbeeh
108+ adhkar organised by occasion, from morning and evening to travel and food, with a haptic tasbeeh counter that auto-cycles through the tasbeeh and tracks daily counts.
Offline-first, Arabic-first
SQLite for local persistence, Zustand and React Query for state and data, i18next with Arabic as the launch locale, and a purple-tinted design system with Islamic geometric overlays and spring micro-interactions.
